Ramayana is heading towards a massive opening weekend at the worldwide box office, but the numbers have fallen short of expectations considering the film’s scale and budget. The four-day extended weekend is expected to close between ₹480 crore and ₹490 crore gross worldwide. While the figure would be an extraordinary achievement for most films, it leaves Ramayana outside the top five Indian opening weekends. The film is also expected to finish below RRR, which collected approximately ₹500 crore during its opening weekend.
Hindi Version Remains a Concern
The biggest concern is the performance of the Hindi version in India, which has reportedly failed to meet trade expectations. High ticket prices in major Hindi markets and the pre-Diwali release period have affected footfalls. In comparison, the Telugu, Kannada, Tamil and Malayalam versions have performed well. Overseas collections have also remained strong, reportedly crossing ₹165 crore within the first three days. The film’s estimated ₹480–490 crore opening weekend represents less than 25% of its reported ₹2,000 crore break-even target.
Post-Diwali Holidays Could Change Everything
Despite the relatively modest opening against expectations, Ramayana could witness a significant turnaround during the post-Diwali holidays. Monday and Tuesday are expected to bring substantial growth, particularly in the Hindi markets. Positive word of mouth could further improve its prospects as audiences return to theatres after the festivities. The opening weekend may have missed the top five, but the film’s long-term box-office performance will ultimately determine its commercial fate.
